Bottom line, is that this refrain is the same, year after year. With the
fantastic academic reputation of this school, great facilities, all the scholarship resources any coach could need, there is no reason that this team should not succeed year after year. Tech most likely funds all 12 scholarships at an out of state level, meaning that with judicious use of in-state talent and academic scholarships that are also available, an entire 18 person team could be given full rides. There is no excuse to not be at least 5 deep in the outfield, 3 deep at corner and middle infield, 3 deep at catcher, and 4 deep in the circle. JMU, Longwood, and Liberty only wish they had Tech's financial resources, yet consistently put better teams on the dirt. I will say that Tech could have a disadvantage in that I don't believe that we have the medical and nursing programs that a lot of softball players desire. (I admit I am not sure here - we didn't use to have them, but maybe we do now.) A decent percentage of the girls on her teams were interested in those types of majors, which would reduce the overall pool that Tech can recruit.
However, bottom line is that if the girls on the roster can't play, then it is the coach's fault for poor recruiting. What is most likely, is that the girls on the roster were pretty good club ball players, but regressed under poor coaching.
